Urshal’s Wall Building Machine
1930
The concept of 3DCP has been around longer than many people realise. In 1930 William E. Urschel of Valparaiso, Indiana, invented what he called the “Wall Building Machine”. The machine was pretty basic and in 1940 he made some improvement to his “Wall Building Machine”. In 1941 he filed a patent for his machine describing his idea.
His machine consisted of an extruder mounted on the end of a counterweighted boom. The boom swivels on a mast and is cranked up manually for material extrusion. This is the very first concept of 3DCP recorded, and little did Urschel know that today we’d be exploring this concept all around the world, even in the Caribbean.
